Planting Veggie gardens

Planting Veggie Gardens

Possibilities Unearthed derives from the need for Absa to leave a long-lasting legacy in the communities that the operate in.

Absa identifies a school in the community, sends a team to install a sustainable vegetable garden, and the school then benefits from the harvest that comes from the garden –either through using the crops for their feeding schemes or by selling the harvest to the community.

This initiative first started in Franschhoek at the Franschhoek Primary School in 2021, with ThembalethuHigh School in George following in 2022.

Absa and Nelson Mandela Foundation partnership

Event: 2024 Legacy Ride4Hope Tour and #Nelson Mandela #Classrooms4Hope

Date: 4 to 7 September

Venue: Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick, Pietermaritzburg, and finish in Mvezo, Eastern Cape, the hometown of Nelson Mandela.

As an official Nelson Mandela Day initiative, the Ride4Hope Tour was started in 2018 to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) and other charitable causes. The event provides a platform for people from different walks of life to come together to be part of a cycling event that is not just about riding your bike, but also about making a difference with each pedal stroke.

The 2024 edition of the four-day tour from 4 to 7 September 2024, will see over 80 cyclists from all walks of life joining hands to raise funds for the NMF as well as schools and charitable causes along the route. In its second year of the #Classrooms4Hope initiative, the tour has identified the existing need of overcrowded classrooms at schools, with most schools being in dire need of additional classrooms.

The Ride4Hope Tour will make various stops in Underberg, Kokstad, Mthatha and Qunu, and through the #Classrooms4hope initiative, will make classroom donations in line with the Legacy Project approach of leaving a lasting legacy in every town visited. This also supports the call from the NMF to use Mandela Day as a day that brings people together to take action against poverty and advance nation-building projects.

Our commitment at Kwa-Payne Primary School, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Ride4Hope, involves investing in the building and furnishing of three new classrooms. We aim to continue leaving a legacy and spreading the message of #Classrooms4Hope. Absa is dedicated to leaving a lasting impact and working with the school in the future to empower growth and opportunities.  Absa’s efforts to be a force for good are as diverse as they are wide-reaching. Our journey to bring more change to communities continues because, through everyone’s collective efforts, we are delivering on our promise of empowering Africa’s tomorrow, together … one story at a time.

iloveboobies

iloveboobies

In a heartwarming effort to be a driving force for good, Absa joined forces with the official charity partner of the Absa Cape Epic, iloveboobies. Together, they committed to providing over 1 000 free breast examinations to South African women during the course of the Absa cycling calendar. It's a poignant reminder that breast cancer doesn't discriminate – it can affect anyone, regardless of race or background. So, as we cherish our loved ones this month, let's also cherish our health and prioritise self-care.

This collaboration resonates deeply with Absa's #SheUntamed initiative – a movement launched in 2019 to promote women's participation in the race that measures all, the Absa Cape Epic. #SheUntamed embodies Absa's commitment to empowering women, fostering inclusivity and breaking down barriers within the cycling realm.
