Overview
As a proudly Pan-African organisation, Absa is committed to being an active force for good in the communities in which it operates. Across our Africa Regions, our Corporate Citizenship work is shaped by the needs, aspirations and lived realities of our communities, and informed by the socio-economic dynamics of each market. Guided by our Purpose of empowering Africa’s tomorrow, together … one story at a time, we aim to contribute to inclusive and sustainable growth by delivering programmes that respond to local priorities while drawing on the strength of the Absa Group.
Our Corporate Citizenship efforts focus on creating meaningful, measurable and lasting impact. We support communities through initiatives that promote financial inclusion, entrepreneurship and employability. We also respond to humanitarian needs, including natural disasters and other community relief efforts, through targeted social-impact interventions.
Over the past two years, our work has touched the lives of more than 440 000 people across our markets. This reflects our continued commitment to helping address socio-economic challenges and enabling positive change in the communities we call home.
Our strategic focus
Our Africa Regions Corporate Citizenship strategy is anchored on an ambition to advance financial inclusion through entrepreneurship. It is delivered through scalable, locally relevant initiatives that unlock opportunity, strengthen capability and support inclusive economic participation.
Financial literacy and education
Financial literacy is a critical enabler of economic empowerment. It helps individuals, households and businesses make informed decisions, manage their resources responsibly and plan with greater confidence for the future. Through our Consumer Financial Education initiative, we equip individuals and small businesses with practical knowledge in areas such as budgeting, saving, responsible borrowing, investing and financial planning. These programmes are designed to strengthen financial capabilities and support more confident participation in the economy.
By improving access to financial knowledge, we aim to help build more resilient communities and contribute to long-term economic inclusion across our markets.
Entrepreneurship and employability
Africa’s young people represent one of the continent’s greatest opportunities. However, youth unemployment remains a significant challenge across many of the markets in which we operate. Absa is committed to helping young people access the skills, tools and opportunities they need to become economically active.
Our employability initiatives, including ReadytoWork, provide young people with access to learning content that helps prepare them for the world of work, entrepreneurship and self-employment. These programmes focus on building practical capabilities, confidence and workplace readiness.
We believe that entrepreneurs play a vital role in driving innovation, creating jobs and supporting sustainable economic growth. Through targeted enterprise development initiatives, including programmes such as the Young Africa Works and Junior Achievement Africa, we support young people and emerging entrepreneurs to build viable businesses, access opportunities and contribute to their local economies.
Volunteerism and disaster relief
Our colleagues play a vital role in bringing our Corporate Citizenship commitment to life. Through colleague volunteering, we enable our people to contribute their time, skills and expertise to causes that matter to them and the communities we serve. This includes skills-based volunteering, mentoring, fundraising, school and community support, and partnerships with non-profit organisations.
In times of crisis, our disaster relief efforts help communities affected by natural disasters, food insecurity, environmental challenges and other social pressures. Working with colleagues, partners and local stakeholders, we provide timely relief and recovery support that addresses immediate needs while contributing to longer-term resilience.
Together, these initiatives reflect our commitment to active citizenship, practical community support and sustainable social impact across our Africa Regions.
