Absa Cape Epic 2026: Where endurance meets legacy
The stage is set for the Western Cape to host the world’s toughest mountain bike stage race, the Absa Cape Epic, which returns for its 22nd edition on 15 March 2026.
For more than two decades, the Absa Cape Epic has brought together the world’s strongest mountain bikers to South Africa’s rugged terrain. Known globally as one of the toughest and most respected stage races, the competition attracts riders and fans from over 40 countries, all drawn by a shared passion for mountain biking.
This year’s edition is especially significant. It marks 20 years of Absa as title sponsor, a milestone that reflects a partnership built on consistency and genuine commitment to the communities that host the race. Beyond the finish line, Absa’s involvement ensures a lasting impact on local businesses, riders and the wider South African mountain biking ecosystem.
The Ultimate Test of Endurance
The Absa Cape Epic is designed to challenge every rider physically and mentally. Over eight stages, participants face roughly 692 kilometres of rugged trails, climbing around 15 900 metres through iconic stages around Montagu and Greyton, before finishing in Stellenbosch.
Each stage mixes steep climbs and untamed terrain, demanding strategy and perseverance. It is this combination of distance and technical challenge that has cemented the Absa Cape Epic’s reputation as the world’s premier mountain bike stage race.
More than a Race: A Global Sporting Phenomenon
After 21 editions, the Absa Cape Epic has grown into more than a competition. It is a week-long celebration of mountain biking, where the world converges on the Western Cape to witness something extraordinary.
Broadcast coverage carries the action to homes around the globe, showcasing South Africa’s dramatic landscapes, the riders’ dedication and the artistry of mountain biking.
The race also leaves a visible footprint locally. Towns along the route come alive during race week. Hotels, restaurants, logistics teams and small businesses all become part of the Absa Cape Epic story. In 2026, the race will continue to balance elite-level competition with meaningful impact for the communities along its path.

Advancing Inclusion through #SheUntamed
Since 2019, Absa #SheUntamed has been opening doors for women in competitive mountain biking. The programme combines mentorship, practical training and race-readiness support, giving female riders the confidence to line up alongside the best.
Race villages are designed with intent. They operate around the clock, offering rest, recovery, expert bike mechanics and balanced nutrition. Every detail is managed so competitors can focus entirely on the challenge ahead.
Thanks to #SheUntamed, more female teams will line up at the start, ready to conquer the same climbs and descents as their male counterparts.
