The Pollution Research Group (PRG) is a professional research centre housed in the basement of the Chemical Engineering building on the Howard College Campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The main funders for the Group includes the South Africa Water Research Commission, the eThekwini Municipality and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The PRG conducts innovative research projects on water management, wastewater reclamation, the impact of effluents on local environments, sanitation systems, and other water related environmental issues. A key aspect of this research is the close collaboration with the Water and Sanitation unit within the eThekwini Municipality, Durban.

The PRG was awarded a grant by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) in June 2017 entitled “Capacity Building Support for Ongoing Prototype Testing Platform”. Under this programme, the PRG provides laboratory and technical support to other grantees to test prototype sanitation systems to assess their feasibility, durability and robustness in the field.

The Pollution Research Group, and partners, will be demonstrating an innovative sanitation solution in our Dome.

For more information on PRG, visit http://prg.ukzn.ac.za/

This programme is undertaken in partnership with several other grantees, which include:

With a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in its “Reinvent the Toilet Challenge”, EOOS developed a three-stream separation system to support transformative off-grid, high-tech sanitation with a next generation frontend for sitting and squatting.
